Surrealism Part Two

Surrealism continued… Some more images i took for surrealism:

Floating umbrella. Who is holding it?
I took this image by throwing the umbrella in the air and taking a continuous shooting mode

is he in the bin? can he fit?
I took this image by making des hide bend the bin and just pop his head above the open lid to make him appear to be inside

Trapped in the stairs
i took this image by climbing under the stairwell and poking only the arms and legs through the gaps of the stairs

Some more images i took over the weekend involving a long flash exposure to make the model (maia) look like she was moving or intact, had a ghost floating around her body:

Over  "4 seconds of exposure F16 ISO 100 using a tungsten light coming from the right hand side of the model and one main light pointing down at the area of shooting.

Second photo using a scarf to cause motion over the face

Surrealism

Surrealism is to make an image appear surreal yet it is still real.
Surrealism is a cultural movement that began in the early 1920s, and is best known for its visual artworks and writings. The aim was to "resolve the previously contradictory conditions of dream and reality." Artists painted unnerving, illogical scenes with photographic precision, created strange creatures from everyday objects and developed painting techniques that allowed the unconscious to express itself and/or an idea/concept.
Surrealist works feature the element of surprise, unexpected juxtapositions and non sequitur; however, many Surrealist artists and writers regard their work as an expression of the philosophical movement first and foremost, with the works being an artifact. Leader AndrĂ© Breton was explicit in his assertion that Surrealism was, above all, a revolutionary movement.

Here are some examples of which i think appear surreal. Taken by myself:

No head
I took this by getting very low to the subject i was taking and made him put his head back as  far as possible

Small body/woman
I achieved this shot standing on top of a bench pointing down at the subject. Plus the wig
Stuck in the bin! Achieved by getting low in front of the subject and making the person hide all of his body.

invisible face
achieved by holding a hollow wig in front of the face. Held half a meter in front.
Stuck in the stairs
achieved by sticking the legs through the stairwell and taking a photo from above the subject
Floating head/ umbrella

Who is holding the umbrella?
Taken by chucking the umbrella in the air and then taking the shot

Modernism

Modernism is a movement of transformations in todays society. 'Moving with the times' '21st century' todays design and concept on life. It can be from architecture, art itself, shapes, growth in society, creations and inventions, the future before your eyes.

Todays task involved taking images which i think personally represent modernism:
Todays society are creating complicated yet beautiful art work. This photo is an example of Modern Architecture of the Tafe grounds

When you think of the word modern you think future. New. Technology is growing

Energy drinks are a new phase in todays society

USBs are a new 'modern' creation that we use daily

Even laptops are fitting inside paper thin envelopes!

Some more modern photographs i took :
Using a born colour scoros light pack. Using a continuous shooting mode to capture the liquid in the glass to change the two drops of green dye at the bottom of the glass
This is the middle period of the water being poured

A modern photograph that can be in todays magazines as a product advertisement method. All taken with a shutter speed of 1/125th ISO 100 F16

A modern make of coffee/ product photography style

Pictorialism : Photoshop Task 2

Taking photoshop to a different level. Creating a more dramatic pictorial image from photos i have taken and overlaying different textures and layers in photoshop only.

The outcome :
created using two images combined. One landscape photo and one textured photo of leather. Multiple adjustment layers used such as; black and white, brightness and contrast. Using the black and white adjustment layer to erase the lanton colours creating that natural sun set affect by setting the foreground colour holding down the letter 'x' on the keyboard. This is using the main colours from the first landscape layer.

Step by step process:
Images used::

This is the textured image i used

This is the main landscape image

When combining these two images i used a multiplying layer of 100% opacity. I then added Multiple adjustment layers used such as; black and white, brightness and contrast. Using the black and white adjustment layer to erase the lanton colours creating that natural sun set affect by setting the foreground colour holding down the letter 'x' on the keyboard. This is using the main colours from the first landscape layer. With a final adjustment i added a filter called 'noise' to create that grainy pictorial affect.

Process in photoshop :

Photoshop Pictorialism

  • Using Adobe photoshop to create a dramatic yet textured affect
By using photoshop you can manipulate an image to look completely different to its original state creating an illusion. The illusion i have tried to achieve involves the subject of pictorialism (19th century) images taken from the 21st century and then combined with a textured image to create a paint affect.

This is the base image that i have used. I then took photos of different textures from buildings that i could use to overlay this original image to create that pictorial affect

This is the image i will be using as the 'textured' layer that will overlay the base image. Taken of a brick wall around campus

Creating layers, brightness/contrast adjustments, black and white affects i have achieved 'overlaying' both images together with an opacity of 80% to keep the brick texture.
